Get Safe Online Partners with Ask Silver to launch a new scam detector

October 7th 2024

  • A new simple way to check instantly if a text or email is a scam or not.

Get Safe Online today announces a partnership with Ask Silver to launch a new tool, powered by AI and designed to protect thousands of individuals from scams.

Ask Silver is a simple tool that anyone with a smartphone can use to protect themselves from scams. Users simply upload a screenshot of any text, email or website they’re suspicious about and using the power of AI, Ask Silver will instantly check on the communication in question and indicate whether it’s safe or a ‘Red Flag’, also suggesting next steps to stay safe.

Not-for-profit organisation Get Safe Online is an authoritative and widely respected resource designed to help individuals and small businesses stay safe, secure and confident when using the internet. The information and advice provided by its team of experts is designed to be impartial, practical and easy to follow. Following the launch of its hugely successful Check a Website feature in July 2022 and a game which enables people to check their social media footprint, Ask Silver is the latest addition to Get Safe Online’s scam busting tools.

Ask Silver is expected to prevent thousands of victims falling for scams every year.

As the Payment Systems Regulator enforces new legislation today, whereby paying and receiving banks and payment providers will need to jointly refund consumers any money lost to scams up to the value of £85,000, it is still as important that individuals continue to be on their guard.

The partnership launch also coincides with the launch of Get AI-Safe Online Week, championing Ask Silver as a perfect example of how AI can be used for good.

To find out more, users should visit www.getsafeonline.org/asksilver  Available inside WhatsApp, it appears like any other contact on the platform. Once signed up, they receive a one-time email with a QR code to scan, which opens the WhatsApp chat. The user then simply uploads a screenshot of anything they want to check. They can also report scams to the authorities with one tap at the end of the check.

Tony Neate, CEO at Get Safe Online comments, “Despite new requirements for banks, it is imperative that all of us remain vigilant when it comes to scams. This fantastic new tool is revolutionary and we are recommending that people download and save Ask Silver to their What’s App contact list now and try it out. It’s so simple to use and if it saves you from a scam, what’s not to like?”

Alex Somervell, founder of Ask Silver adds: “In this digital age where scams are increasingly sophisticated and scammers are highly experienced, we must empower individuals with tools that enhance their vigilance and allow them to live, shop and buy without fear.

“Ask Silver provides that very support and now, by partnering with Get Safe Online, we are further strengthening our commitment to online safety and look forward to collaborating with the team a lot more in the future.”
